Yesss, I love them so much, especially because it wasn't love at first sight and they have become such good friends first. Celaena/Aelin is completely at home with Rowan, and he accepts her exactly as she is, flaws and all. Their relationship is just so much more powerful for me than hers with Chaol. They push each other to become better versions of themselves and overcome their past traumas and fear.
Honestly, there are three more books coming, so a lot can change, but to me it looks like there will be a grander romantic arc at work here between Aelin and Rowan.
Aelin takes off Chaol's ring at the end of Heir of Fire, which has plenty of meaning in itself. She ispartially going back to the capital to make sure he's okay, but her taking off the ring shows that she's moving on. Chaol was the person she needed after Endovier; he helped her become who she is now, but considering Chaol's personality, I don't think he'll ever be able to accept all of Aelin (he had trouble enough trying to accept Celaena the assassin). Besides all of this, there is still the conversation from Heir of Fire that I can't help but think of. When Rowan and Aelin are sitting up in a tree one night, they talk about mates and Celaena asks if she would know if Chaol was hers. Rowan then asks if she wants the truth. This makes me think that the news was not something she would want to hear, which at that point would be no, he wasn't her mate. I think Celaena/Aelin realizes that Chaol isn't her mate deep down, which is why she doesn't want the truth that night.
On another note, in this same conversation Rowan also says that it can take a while for a bond to snap into place. While this does still leave room for Chaol, I think it builds an ever stronger possibility for Rowan. Aelin and Rowan have already shown through Heir of Fire just haw far they are willing to go for each other. Rowan literally has to be restrained by several of his cader to stop him from going to Aelin during the final battle, and even Maeve knew that Rowan was Aelin's weak spot. She wouldn't give up the location of the wyrd key for all the world, but she seemed about to do so for Prince Rowan.
Aelin's and Rowan's bond is incredibly strong already, and it wouldn't surprise me in the least if a mating bond springs up later in the books. Even if they only remain friends, I'll be okay with that, though I won't be able to help thinking of them as an old, bickering married couple in my head. :)
Wow. You really thought this one through. :) Yes, I agree with everything, EVERYTHING. I'm holding on to the hope that sprung up during Celaena & Rowan's conversation on the tree. I'M CLINGING TO IT.
Besides, if Aelin won't take Rowan, then I will.
Wow I really can't wait to read about Rowan in the next book!! Does this mean that Chaol and Dorian are totally out of the picture? I just finished Throne of Glass so I still ship Celaena with one of them...but everyone talks about Rowan, so he must be amazing :)!
I wouldn't say they're out of the picture - that's what makes it so interesting! I'm just particularly rooting for Rowan now. :) Who are you shipping Celaena with now? Before Heir of Fire, I was admittedly a Celaena/Chaol fan lol.
And Lyanna, yess, if Celaena doesn't take him, I will gladly do it for her lol. :)
Hmmm since I haven't read Heir of Fire, I kind of ship Celaena with Dorian. It's SUCH a close tie between Chaol and Dorian, but Dorian seems so vulnerable that it kind of made me lean towards him.
It's too hard to decide though!! I'm guessing I'll be a huge Rowan fan soon... :D
Did you ever ship Celaena and Dorian or was it always Chaol?
Sarah J. Maas has the unique talent of being able to switch my shipping allegiance throughout the series, which is quite the accomplishment since I usually pick one ship and then stick with it until it either flies or sinks haha.
I reallyy liked both Chaol and Dorian in book 1, so it was kind of a hard choice. I feel like they just bring out different sides of Celaena, and I like their relationships with her for different reason. I think by about midway through book 1 I was slightly more pro-Chaol, but I'm also a sucker for the warrior guy/captain love interest. He definitely won out over Dorian by book 2, though I still love Dorian and want him to be happy and safe. Can't everyone win? -_-
I think part of the reason why I was able to switch so easily to Rowan was because there was always a part of me that felt that Chaol couldn't ever completely understand Celaena. There was always a bit of a barrier between them. I don't see that type of barrier with Rowan.
Do let us know what you think when you get to Rowan! He's fabulous lol. Are you starting Heir of Fire anytime soon?
Yes -- I'm so impressed how Sarah writes about the love connections in the book. Especially because it's not like Celaena is some damsel in distress- she's still a strong independent woman regardless of the guys!
Haha I KNOW - why can't everyone win and find true love?? I am seriously torn between the two guys, but interesting about Chaol in Book 2.
So I have only read Throne of Glass so far- haven't even started Crown of Midnight! I heard a lot of great things about the series but only started this month because of our book club. Right now, I'm reading The Mime Order (have you read The Bone Season?) since it's our book for next month BUT the second I'm done I will return to Crown of Midnight and Heir of Fire. I SPED through Throne of Glass because it was so good, so I'm sure it will be the same for the other two books.
I'll report back once I'm caught up :D If you're looking for a new book series though, you should check out The Bone Season and read along with us for the second book next month! Are you new to Wikia P.S.? Welcome! My name is Ariana.
I am sorry, but nothing can top Chaolaena for me.
Hehe nice! Woot <3 Chaol
What do you think?
